The official currency of Laos, introduced into circulation as recently as 1955, is issued by the Central Bank of Laos. Due to its low exchange rate against major world currencies, the kip is available in very large denominations – banknotes of 1,000, 10,000, or even 100,000 kip are common. This currency is used primarily locally – in tourism, payments in US dollars or Thai baht are also popular.
